De esthetische waardering van muziek als muziek

"I have argued (...) that the evaluation of musical works aesthetically and as music has a special status. The specialness of those standards of evaluation derives from the specialness of the interest to which they are relative. (...) I would (like) to go on to catalogue the properties or relationships that are value-conferring within musical works. (...) In general terms, there is commendation for such things as unity in variety, the combination of aptness and unexpectedness that is often found in a musical continuation, and so on. In particular terms, in symphonic works the economical use of materials, structural complexity, and the development of material are valued; in songs an appropriate interaction between the content of the text and the expressiveness of the music is valued; in performances of works with a written score we value the performer's creativity in realizing faithfully what is determined by the composer, and so on. (p. 206)

 

Commentaar:

Zou de afwezigheid van deze kenmerken betekenen dat een muziekstuk geen waarde heeft?
Bovendien wordt de esthetische waardering van muziek als muziek - wat hij daarmee bedoeld wordt uitgelegd op p. 205 - alleen binnen de muzikale context begrepen. Ik denk dat we de waarde van muziek niet op dezelfde manier zouden beoordelen, als we niet ook de extra, buiten-muzikale voordelen laten meewegen, zoals de invloed die muziek heeft op ons (fysieke en mentale) leven.
