Extract:

"Philosophy and music stood in an antagonistic but intimate relation. Because music was the exemplary language of pure expression but of no concept, and philosophy that of pure concept but no expression, each yearned, as if seeking a (Goethean) affinity, for what the other had - rational articulation for the one, and expression for the other. In their productive but troubled yearning they jointly tracked the historical course of modernity." (p. 25)
