"(...) there is empirical evidence to suggest that when we act out of compassion for someone else, then we act with the aim of relieving this other person of her suffering. As already mentioned, Batson and Coke (1981) have found evidence that there are two significantly different reactions to other people's suffering: (1) personal distress (which seems to come close to afflictive suffering) and (2) empathy (which includes compassion)." (p. 130)
