"The problem was that the morality of the system depended on an analytic of the body, whereas the experience of it was grounded in an aesthetic of the body. Coginition and perception far from being rooted in the same substance, antagonised the soul. Neither material sense nor moral feeling could exist without obscuring the transparency of the other, and yet both were necessary: the analytic named the moral as natural and set the grid of emotions in which the body must move; the aesthetic affirmed as empirical that innate morality of being." Commentaar:

Hoewel deze discussie over muziek uit de 18e eeuw gaat, is het probleem dat besproken wordt nog steeds actueel. Dit probleem gaat over de verhouding tussen het analytische en het esthetische op het terrein van de muzikale emotie en de moraal. De spanning tussen objectiviteit (analyse) en subjectiviteit (esthetiek) roept vragen op over de algemeen geldendheid van de muzikale waarden. Het probleem van balanceren en nuanceren is net als in de 18e eeuw ook nu nog onderwerp van gesprek, alleen wordt er tegenwoordig niet meer uitgegaan van ingeboren (natuurlijke) moraliteit en een vaste lijst van standaard emoties (affecten).
