"The detachment to which I refer does not involve a detached aesthetic attitude of contemplation, as in some older aesthetic theories. One need not and often should not be emotionally uninvolved when listening to music, and one's perceptual attention, if not behaviour, must be quite active as well. It is the music itself that is seperated from the practical affairs of the everyday world, not the listener who must be detached from the music as the object of attention. My thesis, in short is, that the peculiar and most inclusive value of music lies precisely in its presenting to us an alternative world, in which we can be actively, but not practically, engaged. the way in which this world is truly alternative or different connects with the felt ineffability of musical experience, with the very difficulty we have been having in expressing in words its value." Commentaar:

Het is interessant hoe actieve betrokkenheid (niet de praktische) gekoppeld wordt aan het gegeven dat muziek in staat is om ons een alternatieve wereld, voorbij het alledaagse, te presenteren. Hierin ligt een belangrijke waarde van muziek verscholen. Het is de ont-moeting met muziek die het mogelijk maakt om die wereld te betreden. Deze ont-moeting, dit niet-moeten, is vrijwillig, vol overgave, maar verlangt wel een actieve, open, nieuwsgierige houding. (STAP 1: Relevant artikel via Bibliografie Stanford)
